People Assisted: 50 , Location: Burmese Border Areas, S Bangladesh
18 December 2007
Mercy Mankind distributed 50 thick winter shawls to Burmese Refugees living near the border in southern bangladesh. On the map below, its where the letter "l" overlaps in the phrase "Bay of Bengal" Here are some photos.
Some of these people confided in us about their oppression in Burma, and why they fled. They said Muslim women get raped, are refused marriage, their cattle stolen, their mosques destroyed and they are beaten. Hence they have sought refuge in Bangladesh. For more background info on these refugees, please click here.
The refugees we helped, are squatting illegally. They do not receive any help even from the UN camp which is nearby. The one's with husbands, they work as rick shaw drivers earning $1 or $2 a day. HIV is a problem amongst the refugee community. Some of the most vulnerable women are abused and work as sex workers just to survive and feed themselves and their children.
Mercy Mankind will be working long-term with burmese refugees, if you can help us, please mark your donations with "Burmese Refugees" .
