People Assisted: 300 Families
Location: South Eastern Bangladesh

Friday 7 Sept 2007: The tribal people of the chakma tribe in Bangladesh are extremely poor people.

We gave 300 families 5kg of rice each which will help feed them for about a week. As with many remote parts of Bangladesh, there is no gas or electricity.

The Chakma specialise in weaving. They live in south eastern Bangladesh in the hilly areas. We were there for two days and it was raining constantly, that's why the distribution was done indoors.

Their features resemble that of the Burmese people because they live very close to the Burmese border and their ancestors have been in the now Bangladesh area (former East Pakistan)for hundreds of years. They speak both Bengali (Bangla) as well as their own language. We want to thank the local governemt officials who enabled us to carry out our work. Can you help us with future projects ?

Our volunteer, a little bit tired now.

A friend enjoys a cigarette (this a hukka for smoking tobacco, its quite common in Bangladesh). Water is used as a filter.

It was a hard job getting there in the rain. We had to wade through mud and walk quite some distance.
